Killington Resort plans mountain bike expansion
Killington Resort wrapped up the 2024 mountain bike season on Sunday, Oct. 27 after more than 80 days of lift-accessed downhill action. Then two days later, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, the resort announced plans for a trail expansion in summer 2025 as part of the $30 million investments from its new independent ownership. The permitting process is currently underway with the state for the new trail, which will be serviced by the Ramshead Express Quad. This portion of the expansion will cost $300,000. Killington’s bike park currently offers 30 miles of mountain biking trails.
The new trail will start at the top of the Ramshead head and continue down biker’s left of Blue Magic. The trail will be coded blue (intermediate difficulty) and span over 2 miles with an intermediate pitch. It’ll be mostly single track with a narrower feel than Blue Magic, the resort said. It will intersect with Blue Magic at several points, offering riders an option to easily switch between trails for new experiences on different laps. The trail will make use of natural terrain to create jumps, step downs and have wooden features including berms, diving boards, whale tails and more.

Three people taken into custody in reported kidnapping of Vermonter in the Philippines
Authorities say they believe Elliot Eastman is alive and have identified three additional suspects who they say were also involved in the crime.
by Alan J. Keays
Police in the Philippines said they have arrested three people in connection with their investigation into the reported kidnapping earlier this month of a Vermont man who had been living in that country for the past several months.
Authorities in the Philippines have been searching for 26-year-old Elliot Eastman since Oct. 17, when he was reportedly shot in the leg, abducted and taken onto a boat by his assailants in Sibuco, in the southern province of Zamboanga del Norte.
A law enforcement task force established to investigate Eastman’s disappearance reported in a press release posted Wednesday on a regional police agency’s Facebook page that, as of Tuesday, they had three suspects in custody who had “direct participation in the kidnapping.”
The police added in the statement, “The meticulous intelligence, investigation, and tactical operations” also led to the identification of three other suspects involved in the crime.
Complaints have been filed in court against “six principal suspects and other John Does as accessories of the crime,” police said.

Candidate forum at Springfield prison highlights voting rights behind bars
Incarcerated people want to be part of the decision making, but barriers remain.
by Ethan Weinstein
A first of its kind forum last week put three candidates for statewide office in front of prospective voters, who happen to be residents of Southern State Correctional Facility.
The event celebrated Vermont’s distinction as one of only three jurisdictions, alongside Maine and Washington D.C., that allows its incarcerated population to vote.
“I’m proud of this both as an administrator of this system, and as a Vermonter,” said Nick Deml, the Vermont Department of Corrections Commissioner, kicking off the forum.
U.S. Rep Becca Balint, D-Vt, U.S. Senate candidate Gerald Malloy, and Democratic gubernatorial challenger Esther Charlestin answered pre-written questions in the Springfield prison visiting room during the one hour forum.
“I wanted to be part of the decision making,” said D.C., one of about 20 incarcerated people who attended, describing his reason for voting.
