Selectboard Meets TONIGHT, November 25 at 6:30 PM
The meeting tonight opens with a public hearing on the proposed changes to the zoning bylaws regarding in home child care. Warning Notice

Followed by the start of the FY2026 budget discussion.
According to the packet notes provided to the Selectboard by the town manager: " (the) General Fund, Highway Fund, and Solid Waste Fund budgets have been assembled".
The town manager noted that "On November 13th the Fire Department Committee/ Task Force held a meeting and we decided to combine our three (3) Fire Department budgets into one (1) more efficient budget. We eliminated President stipends and increased stipends for Firefighters. Although our contract for reappraisal includes Assessing services, we maintained the contracted Assessor line item to provide support for the reappraisal."

The tax rate increase of the FY26 proposed budget, according to the town manger notes, "would increase by 0.0353, and taxes per $100,000 of property value would increase by $35 annually/ $8.75 quarterly. For example, if a property is valued at $250,000, the increase would be $87.50 annually/ $21.87 quarterly.

Stay tuned, more to come.

Windsor County criminal court temporarily moves to Woodstock
The move of criminal cases and the family division has been necessitated by a scheduled $13.2 million renovation of the 37-year-old White River Junction courthouse.
by Valley News

This story by John Lippman was first published in The Valley News on Nov. 16

WOODSTOCK — For the next 18 months or so, Windsor County criminal court cases will be heading back to the future.

Back, that is, to criminal cases being heard in the county’s historic Woodstock courthouse — and back again to resorting to video conference hearings introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Nov. 1, the county’s criminal court hearings moved to the courthouse in Woodstock, which previously dealt with only civil matters. With the downtown White River Junction courthouse now closed for renovations, scheduling and logistical headaches are likely to follow anyone involved in the county’s criminal justice system, which only recently overcame obstacles created by the pandemic.

Initially scheduled to occur this past summer, the move was delayed to prepare the Woodstock building, with its 19th-Century furnishings, for the influx of criminal hearings and defendants in custody — a stark adjustment from the courthouse’s genteel business of civil lawsuits, landlord and tenant disputes, and probate cases.

Vermont receives $5.3 million in federal grants to expand internet access in the state
“In rural Vermont, some of our towns have been left behind with slow internet service and not being able to participate in our modern way of life,” the chair of the Vermont Community Broadband Board said.
by Klara Bauters

Vermont has been awarded $5.3 million from the federal government to implement its Digital Equity Plan — which outlines how the state will provide individuals and communities with the tools and skills necessary to benefit from meaningful access to affordable, reliable, high-speed internet service.

“Internet and broadband. It’s no longer a luxury. It’s an essential service,” Patty Richards, chair of the Vermont Community Broadband Board, said at a press conference on Thursday morning announcing the award.

Digital equity means that all individuals and communities have access to the internet, technology and digital skills needed to fully engage in modern life. Recent data found that communities lacking fiber internet connection have more than double the number of low-income families compared with those who do have access, said Christine Hallquist, executive director of the Vermont Community Broadband Board, which will distribute the federal funding.

“The digital divide is not just a technological gap. It is an economic divide that impacts our communities and our families,” Hallquist said.

ABS Reads

Albert Bridge School students love to read, and we're looking for a few more adults interested in joining our school on a weekly basis for 30 minutes to partner with a student to read a book, play a game, and make a connection. Reading to others strengthens reading skills, interest and enjoyment in reading, and provides another connection within our community.

A short training will be required for all volunteers to review expectations and the role of a volunteer. Volunteers will need to commit to a weekly 30 minute time slot during the school year. Dates will be provided during the volunteer training.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming an ABS Reads volunteer, please contact Amanda Yates: ayates@wsesu.net or (802) 484-3344.
