After ‘tragic’ election losses, Democrats in the Vermont Senate oust their majority leader
At their first meeting since losing their supermajority, Democratic senators-elect also vowed to refocus on rising property taxes.
A week and a half after Vermont voters eviscerated their supermajority, Senate Democrats convened Saturday to reflect on their election losses and chart a new course ahead of the 2025 legislative session. They voted to retain one top leader — but jettisoned another.
Saturday’s caucus at the Statehouse was the first time Democratic senators-elect had gathered after what Sen. Becca White, D-Windsor, called “an exceptionally difficult, tragic election night.” Republican candidates flipped six Senate seats, ousting four incumbents, and established a new partisan breakdown in the chamber of 17-13 — the narrowest margin Democrats have held in nearly a quarter-century.
Seeing a need to change course, the caucus on Saturday voted out its incumbent majority leader, Sen. Alison Clarkson, D-Windsor, who has held the post for four years. In her place, they elected Sen. Kesha Ram Hinsdale, D/P-Chittenden Southeast.

Vermonters turned out in record numbers to vote in this year’s general election, largely without a hitch, Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas said Tuesday at a formal event certifying the election results.
Out of 522,600 registered voters in the state, 372,885 cast their ballots in last week’s general election, Copeland Hanzas said. That’s nearly 2,000 more voters than the state saw in 2020 — a contest that shattered previous turnout records.
However, voter registrations are higher this year, resulting in a lower turnout rate for eligible voters than in 2020. This year, Vermont’s turnout rate was 71%, while in 2020 it was 73%.

‘Blizzard of Oz’ and ‘Snoah Gahan’ among 118 snowplow names chosen by Vermont students this year
The Vermont Agency of Transportation also received 77 entries to name a brand new plow. The winner? The Vermonster — coming from Townshend Elementary School.
by Olivia Hagios
Vermont students once again had the opportunity to name snowplows from the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
Some of their choices? Snoah Gahan, Blizzard of Oz, Clearopathra, No More Mr. Ice Guy and Luke Snowstopper.
The 118 freshly named plows are part of the agency’s “Name a Plow” program, which is inspired by similar contests in Scotland.
It’s the third year that Vermont elementary and middle school students have competed in the contest, which gives them the opportunity to name the large orange snowplow designated to their school, according to Vermont Business Magazine.
In 2021, the agency held the competition for the first time, with 163 schools participating, and again in 2022 for schools that did not participate the year prior, with 71 more snowplows getting a creative name.

Officials offer reward for information on bald eagle illegally shot in Vermont
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is offering a reward of up to $5,000 “to eligible individuals for information that significantly furthers the investigation.”
by Olivia Hagios
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is offering a reward for information about a bald eagle that was illegally shot in the Addison County town of Bridport last month.
The federal agency is offering up to $5,000 “to eligible individuals for information that significantly furthers the investigation,” according to a joint press release with the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department issued Thursday.
The adult bald eagle was found dead near East Street in Bridport on Oct. 15 after Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department game wardens received reports about the dead bird.
What Vermonters should know about white-tailed deer hunting this season
“There are a good number of deer out there, certainly more than we’ve had the last few years,” wildlife biologist Nick Fortin said.
by Olivia Hagios
Department of Fish & Wildlife officials say the deer population is robust and hunters are primed for success as they head to the woods for the start of the annual deer rifle season.
“There are a good number of deer out there, certainly more than we’ve had the last few years,” Fish & Wildlife biologist Nick Fortin said. He said it can be hard to predict harvest numbers, but anecdotal evidence suggests there are more bucks this year.
The two-week period, commonly known as rifle season to Vermont hunters, allows for a hunter to take one legal buck until Dec. 1, according to the department.
While Vermont hunters don’t need to be aware of any regulation changes going into this season, Fortin said he encourages them to give the department a tooth from any deer they take. This can be done at any check station and helps the department gather valuable age information about Vermont’s deer herd, according to Fortin, who is also the department’s deer project leader.
