Loch Lomand and Eilean Donan Castle: Scottish Isles and Glens
Eilean Donan Castle
This day's adventure includes travel from Glasgow to our hotel in Kyle of Lochalish. We'll be staying two nights the Balmacara Hotel.
It's a dark and gloomy morning as we leave Glasgow. We make a photo stop at Loch Lomond.
You pretty much can't go wrong at a shop that sells Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and Whisky.
Back on the coach and we're traveling through the Great Glen.
We stop at the memorial to Hugh Munro. This large cairn stands at the viewpoint beside the A82 above Loch Tulla (below) between Bridge of Orchy and the Black Mount. The memorial was built in 2000 by W.G. Park and is dedicated to the memory of the numerous mountaineers who have lost their lives in the Scottish hills over the years.
We're traveling though Glencoe and it's magical.
We make a stop at the very photogenic Achnabeithach Cottage, Glencoe
Our lunch stop is in Fort William.
Oh my, there's a Black Isle Brewery pub in town. Guess where Jay and I have lunch?
Oh my, there's a Black Isle Brewery pub in town. Guess where Jay and I have lunch?
Um, HELLO, Hibernator Oatmeal Stout, yes please!
After lunch we have some time to explore the town.
Back on the coach and headed towards Ben Nevis. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the British Isles. The summit is 1,345 metres (4,413 ft) above sea level. It stands at the western end of the Grampian Mountains in the Highland region of Lochaber, close to the town of Fort William.
There is also the Commando Memorial, Spean Bridge to visit.
The fall colors are really out on Loch Garry.
As we round a corner, an ancient castle comes into view.
We arrive at our lodging for the next couple of nights, Balmacara Hotel. Our room is small (if Jay is at the small desk on his computer, I have to climb over the ebd to get to my side!) but the view is awesome.
Dinner at the hotel then it's off to bed for us.
Next up we visit the Isle of Skye and Portree.
