Summer Evening with Friends and Neighbors Returns

The Weathersfield Proctor Library Fundraising Committee has announced the return of their annual “Summer Evening with Friends and Neighbors.” The date is Saturday, July 30th at 6 p.m. at the Weathersfield Center Meeting House on the Weathersfield Center Road, in Weathersfield VT.

The band will be the Vermont Bluegrass Pioneers, which is made up of four members. Some you will recognize. It includes Banjo Dan.

Weathersfield Summer Hikes Announced, sort of

In an email last week Steve Aikenhead announced the summer hiking schedule with a caveats.
He wrote: "We have a SITUATION (a strange situation). Last year we got off to a nice start with an average of 8 hikers on the first four hikes, and then two of us went up Little Ascutney and 6 of us ascended Mt. Tom (with no one getting lost) BUT on the last five scheduled hikes many people wanted to go but ultimately NO ONE was able to show up on ANY of those hikes. This phenomenon wasn’t entirely bad for me, since I was very busy, but this year I’d like a little more certainty."

Steve has offered to  lead several hikes. "I’ll lead five hikes. I’ll join other hikes if someone wants to be the leader, meaning they will take on the responsibility of showing up, barring disaster."

So Steve has put out the call to hike leaders. "Is there a hike you would like to “lead”? Don’t choose “To the cabin”, since I’ll do that one for sure. If you take on this role, let me know of at least two dates and times you would like. I’ll then put the schedule together.

This past weekend, the Yoh Theatre Players performed "Spoon River Anthology", by Lee Edgar Masters, adapted by Charles Aidman, with music by Naomi Caryl Hirschhorn.


During this two act play, we are introduced to the ghosts of people of Spoon River and whose secrets have gone with them to the grave. 






The very talented cast, directed by Marcia Bender, take on many characters from young lovers and preachers and teachers to the funny chronicle of the poor mixed-up Jew who ends up in the wrong cemetery. All jumping in and out the their roles with ease. Some are stoic, some are humorous, some tug at your heart strings but all deliver stellar performances.

The clinic is located at the shelter, in their community room. 
You will receive drop off and pick up instructions upon signing up. They are taking extra precautions currently to keep everyone safe during the Covid-19 virus.

-All pets attending clinics MUST be in SECURE cat carriers. Please refrain from using cardboard carriers or mesh, collapsing carriers, as these tend to be less effective.

After a 2 year break to keep everyone safe during Covid, Ascutney Day is back! Find your way to the summit of Mount Ascutney and ATA will be at the Stone Hut site with refreshments and camaraderie!
Choose one of the three base-to-summit trails to hike up on foot, or drive up the auto road and hike a short half mile to the picnic site. There will be a prize for the oldest and youngest hikers. Dogs welcome but should be leashed at the summit.

"Lace Up for Laura" 5K race Saturday, June 25 8:30 a.m.


The Lace Up for Laura Memorial 5k walk/run is a way to come together the last Saturday in June each year in remembrance of Laura Cody McNaughton who died in a tragic car accident on June 28, 2018.  It is intended to be a fun activity families can participate in together with runners and walkers of all ability. 

The event will consist of two races held on Saturday, June 25, 2022: an approximately 1/3 mile kids 12 and under fun run starting at 8:30 A.M. followed by a 3.1 mile (5km) race starting at 9:00 A.M for all ages and abilities. 

The starts for both races will be located near the intersection of Plains road and Reservoir road. 

The 3.1 mile race will be an out and back race on the scenic dirt road known for its lack of change in elevation. 

The kids race is at 8:30. The first 50 kids will receive custom wooden medallions, the adult winners and runners up in each age category will have custom medals again as well.

Proceeds from the Memorial run will benefit the Laura Cody McNaughton Memorial fund and its annual scholarship which will be awarded to a graduating senior who exemplifies Laura’s leadership and giving spirit, and, is pursuing further education and training in a field where these principles may be put into practice.

Tie Dying event

Students will be tie-dying during Field Day at one of the stations. 

 Send in a labeled item such as a T-shirt for your child to tie dye? In previous years, students have brought in pillowcases, socks, shirts, and baby onesies. The item should be labeled, pre-washed, and 100% cotton for best results. 

 The goal is to prep the item during art class and dye them during field day.

Open House and Community Dinner May 26 5-6:30 p.m.
On Thursday, May 26th WES is hosting an open house and community dinner. This is an opportunity for you to come see some of the great work that our students have done over the course of the school year. 

Their community dinner is an opportunity for them to give back to our community. This year our 8th grade students are in charge of the community dinner with planning the meal, cooking , serving and even cleaning up. 

It is a great service learning project for our students to give back before they leave to go to high school. 

The dinner is free of charge and will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. on that evening. Classrooms will be open to showcase the student work from 6-7 p.m.. It is a great chance to have a meal with our community and to see some of the accomplishments that our children had this year.

The Weathersfield School PTO will be providing a Snack Concession Stand at the home baseball and softball games this spring. 

They will be offering hotdogs, chips, sweet treats, popcorn, drinks, etc. Find their table behind the baseball field. 

They can accept cash and Venmo. The first games at our home field begin on May 2nd, and they will be ready to serve you.

Come hungry and help the PTO's initiatives to support students, teachers, and staff.

Booster Update: On March 29, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a second booster dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for people 50 years of age and older and certain immunocompromised individuals. COVID Cases in Vermont

CDC recommends indoor masking in all 4 Upper Valley counties

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend masks indoors in all four counties of the Upper Valley, according to data the CDC updated on Thursday.

The community level of COVID-19, which takes into account cases and hospitalizations, in Vermont’s Windsor and Orange counties and New Hampshire’s Grafton and Sullivan counties remains “high.” 

In communities with “high” levels of COVID-19 the CDC recommends that people wear masks indoors in public places regardless of their level of personal risk or vaccination status.



Vermont to wind down its state-run Covid-19 testing sites

Erin Petenko reporting for VT Digger writes: Vermont plans to phase out its state-run Covid-19 testing sites in the coming weeks, Health Commissioner Mark Levine announced at a press conference Tuesday.

Most sites will close down during the month of June, he said. After that, Vermonters seeking a PCR, LAMP or antigen test will be able to get one only through pharmacies or health care providers.

“We are fortunate that home testing supplies are widely available, and we are committed to this remaining as convenient and free as it is now,” Levine said. PCR and LAMP tests are considered slightly more accurate than antigen tests, but PCR tests must be administered by a health care professional and can take days to return results. Antigen tests — also called take-home tests — are still considered very accurate by most experts and return results within an hour. LAMP tests can also be self-administered.

The state-run testing sites have operated since March 2020 and have provided the bulk of the more than 3.6 million tests the state has reported since then, primarily via PCR tests, according to the health department’s Covid-19 dashboard. At the height of the pandemic in January, state-run sites were providing more than 10,000 tests per day, but that rate has fallen to around 3,000 tests per day in recent months.

Mt. Ascutney Hospital Open for Walk-Ins M-F 1-5 PM

Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center is now offering walk-in service on weekday afternoons for people ages 2 and older, according to a news release.

The visits are available for urgent, but non-emergency medical needs Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. Patients can check in at the hospital’s central registration, through the main entrance.

Some of the conditions appropriate for care through walk-in services are minor cuts and burns; urinary tract infections; strains and sprains; minor fractures; rashes; and ear, sinus and eye infections. In addition, X-ray and lab services are available on-site.

A nurse will be on hand to determine if a patient’s condition calls for transfer to the emergency department.
