David Ortiz shot in club in Dominican Republic
Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was ambushed
A man who got off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at nearly point-blank range Sunday night in his native Dominican Republic, authorities said.
Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said (via the AP) that the man who shot Ortiz was detained and beaten by patrons at the nightclub. He said authorities are waiting for the gunman to receive treatment for his injuries before they question him.
A standout for the Red Sox on the field and their emotional leader in the clubhouse, Ortiz helped the franchise break its 86-year drought with a World Series win in 2004. The team won two more championships with him, including in 2013 when he was named MVP of the World Series. He retired after the 2016 season.
Ortiz's father, Leo, speaking to reporters outside the clinic, said his son was out of danger and that the bullet had not hit any major organ. He said he had no idea why someone would have shot his son.
