Weathersfield Weekly Blog, March 6

Another Town Meeting has come and gone. Results are reported on my blog

Now that town meeting is behind me it's time to start some seed for my vegetable garden. And if the temperatures ever warm up, we'll tap a few trees. We don’t tap many trees, only about a dozen, but it’s enough to get some syrup stored up for us. If we run out, we can always buy from our neighbors Willis and Tina Wood.

As for seeds, I usually start a few 4th of July variety tomatoes. I move them through a progressive pot regiment so I can plant larger plants in late May and get a few tomatoes the second week of July, if the weather cooperates. I also start New Ace Peppers and basil as they seem to take a long time to germinate.

And of course, now that town meeting is over, our thoughts will turn to our fifth season-Mud Season. I know the paved roads aren’t doing so well after this freeze-thaw winter so it will be interesting to see how the dirt roads do in March and April. Cheers to mud season-bring it on!

Zack's Place Ribbon Cutting
On a bright and sunny winter afternoon, Zack’s Place (ZP) hosted a ribbon cutting for their new walkway to the building’s entrance. The previous entrance was plagued with falling icicles, snow build-up and occasional black ice. This new walkway is covered, heated so the don’t have to shovel and put down sand and salt which was tracked into the building and it provides easier access from the road and sideway directly into the building.

Norm Frates, Jr. Zack’s Place Board President thanked the ZP angels Maureen and John Ausura for a grant through their foundation that helped fund the project. He also thanked the Vermont Community Foundations for a supplemental grant; Jason Gaddis who donated his architectural services to the project; Rick Tobiason and the Colby and Tobiason Construction company; Lee Barnum for help get proper permit and Mark Palmer and his crew for the excavation.

Erin Norton and Jessica Burrell volunteered to be the official ribbon cutters.
