Weathersfield News October 5, 2015 Nancy Nutile-McMenemy photosbynanci@comcast.net There is a nip in the air and the trees are starting to blush. We had our first woodstove fire last Saturday. I pulled out the flannel sheets too, and snuggled in for a cozy night's sleep. I guess it's that time of year. Folks are picking apples and covering their plants at night. Time for our winter preparations to begin in earnest. I'm scoping out a patch to plant my garlic cloves for next summer's harvest. We had a bumper crop this year and I just love dipping homemade bread in garlic soaked in olive oil. Such a great winter time treat. I drove by Willis Woods' place and saw that the cider mill is churning out that sweet apple nectar. A stop for some cider and cider jelly is on my to do list for this week. Saturday October 3, 2015 West Windsor VT On a beautiful early fall Saturday dogs and their owners gathered at Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society 's driveway to run either 1 mile or 5 Km in the 4th Annual Run for the Animals. Thirteen people competed in the 1 mile race and 30 people laced up and leashed up their four legged friends to run the 5 K race.  In addition to their entrance fees, participants were encouraged to fund raise for the animal shelter. The Canine Crusaders from Lyme raised $350 and 15 year old Windsor native Lexi Goad raised $2300. Friday October 2, 2015 Manchester VT Lissie is on a solo tour. Wait, who's Lissie? Well, she is this amazing singer/songwriter from the mid-west and if you like GREAT music-you should know her name. She's very popular in Europe (as a lot of overlooked US talent is) and she's touring without her band. If she sounds this powerful without a band, I cannot even image what she sounds like with more sound behind her. She played two nights at Billsville House Concerts in Manchester VT before heading north to Higher Ground's  Showcase Lounge in Burlington Vt on Sunday Oct 4. Weathersfield VT October 3, 2015 I know, the Weathersfield News column on Saturday night, WHAT? Sorry readers but I was up to my eyeballs in race stuff. What race stuff you ask, well... It was one crazy weekend last weekend. So crazy in fact that I didn't write my weekly column. I was volunteering at the 23rd Annual Vermont 50 Mountain Bike or Ultra Run over at Ascutney Mountain. I haven't missed a race yet! The race benefits Vermont Adaptive, a program that was founded at Ascutney Mountain by West Windsor's Laura Farrell back in 1986. I volunteered with the program for 10 years as a mono-ski instructor. I've hung up my skis but I still volunteer for two special events that raise funds for VT Adaptive-the Vermont 100 (held in July) and the Vermont 50 (held in September.) Sunday September 27, 2015 Ascutney Mountain West Windsor, VT On a foggy and cool Sunday morning over 1200 mountain bikers and runners made their way around the back roads and hilly trails around West Windsor, all in support of  Vermont Adaptive . 50 Mile Bike Start 50 Mile and Relay Team Run 50 Km Run Vermont Adaptive got it's start in 1986 right here in West Windsor on Ascutney Mountain by Laura Farrell. Farrell also founded the Vermont 50 race. Her two sons Bobby and Brad compete each year in either the bike or run races. By 10 a.m. (four hours after the race start) the sun had come out and some mountain bikers were crossing the finish line. Weathersfield News September 23, 2015 Nancy Nutile-McMenemy photosbynanci@comcast.net After our endless summer, there seems to be a crispness in the air. Fall is coming! This coming Sunday Sept. 27, the 23rd Annual Vermont 50 Mountain Bike or Ultra Run takes place at Ascutney Mountain in Brownsville. This sold-out race is a benefit for Vermont Adaptive, which got its start at Ascutney back in 1986 and has since move to Pico and a few other mountains in Vermont . One of the weekend highlights for me is the Kid Free Fun Races held Saturday Sept 26 beginning at 3:30 p.m..  These races are open to all children, so if you know kids who love to run, sign them up. The kids' races are held to encourage children of all ages to have fun and get some exercise. Following the races, the younger children get to hunt through hay bales looking for buried treasure.
