The Dance Factory delights with holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” Dec. 14 and 15

Join Clara on her magical journey to the Kingdom of the Sweets in the Dance Factory’s 33rd annual “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m., at Springfield High School in Springfield, Vt.

Ashley Hensel-Browning directs a cast of youth and adult dancers in the beloved holiday tradition that includes a lighted, growing tree, a whirling snowstorm, and dazzling, custom costumes. The family-friendly show is Vermont’s longest-running production of the classic story ballet.

The Dance Factory’s “The Nutcracker” is an inclusive event that has given hundreds of regional ballet students the invaluable experience of working their way up to soloist roles that most productions outsource to hired professionals. This year’s featured dancers include Springfield senior Sabyn Tennis as the Snow Queen, and Chester senior Niavh Gibney as the Sugar Plum Fairy. Clara will be performed by Gwendelyn Kelley of Weathersfield, with Samantha Cross as the Nutcracker Prince.

Tickets for “The Nutcracker” can be purchased at Tina’s Hallmark and Woodbury Florist in Springfield, and Sage Jewelry and Gifts in Chester, or online at www.dancefactorynutcracker24.eventbrite.com. Limited tickets will be available at the door. A portion of ticket sales will benefit the Springfield High School Drama Club, adding to over $25,000 of “The Nutcracker” proceeds that have gone to support area arts programs.

To ensure “The Nutcracker” is accessible to the wider community, the full performance will be filmed and broadcast by SAPA TV. Additionally, selections from the show will be performed for students at Springfield’s Elm Hill and Union Street Schools, and Weathersfield School, and for residents at Springfield Health and Rehab.

Support for “The Nutcracker” has been generously provided by Amy Hill/Bean Group, Daire Gibney/Barrett & Valley Associates, Denise E. Photography, Erskine’s Grain and Garden, Getaway Mountain Campground, Halladay’s Flowers and Gifts, HB Energy Solutions, Preferred Building Systems, Springfield Food Co-op, and Willow Farm Pet Services.

The Dance Factory is celebrating 40 years of bringing quality, inclusive dance training to the community. For more information, please visit www.dancefactoryvt.com.

San Francisco private equity firm acquires unspecified stake in Vermont’s Simon Pearce glass company
The Vermont company’s CEO declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal, nor would he say who holds a majority position.
by Sarah Mearhoff

The owners of Simon Pearce, Vermont’s iconic glass and pottery maker, have sold an unspecified stake in the half-a-century-old business to a San Francisco-based private equity firm.

Simon Pearce has been headquartered in Windsor since its namesake founded it in 1971. In a press release Tuesday, the company said it had entered into a “strategic partnership” with SBJ Capital, the San Francisco firm, in order to expand its reach.

“In the grand scheme of things, what it means is, it’s assured continuity of the brand and the business in Vermont, and the ability to carry on Simon’s legacy well past the original 50 years that we’ve had so far,” Simon Pearce CEO Jay Benson said in an interview Wednesday.

A motivating factor in the deal, according to Benson, is Pearce’s own age — and his hope for the company to persevere. “Simon is in his 70s,” Benson said.

“There was a very conscious decision made over a decade ago with the family that it would not pass to the next generation of the family,” Benson said. “Simon has seen too many businesses and families destroyed by business transition, and really didn’t want that to happen to his business.”

Layoffs begin at federal immigration center in Essex. Employees fear more will come.
Nearly half of the workers employed at the Vermont Service Center received layoff notices Tuesday, a union official said.
by Corey McDonald

Dozens of employees of the Vermont Service Center, a federal immigration office in Essex, received layoff notices on Tuesday, according to union officials.

The Vermont Department of Labor confirmed Wednesday that it had received notice of layoffs but did not indicate how many.

According to Joy Palm, a local steward for the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, 74 employees at the center received notices. Zachary Knipe, another union representative, said the layoffs amount to nearly half of the 170 workers employed at the facility.

Workers at the service center are employed by ITC Federal, a contractor based in Virginia. The contract workers provide back-office support to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The layoffs mark a continued reduction in employees at the center — part of a broader shift by the federal government to draw down paper-based immigration filing and move toward electronic filing, according to USCIS records obtained by VTDigger.

Eye in the sky: The feds have quietly built surveillance towers along the Canadian border in Vermont, New York
VTDigger found that at least three towers first proposed in 2021 have been built in the region since — and it’s possible more are on the way.
by Shaun Robinson

Nearly four years ago, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials outlined a proposal for a line of surveillance towers along the Canadian border in Vermont and New York. Since then, VTDigger has found, the agency has been quietly making good on its plans.

The federal government has built surveillance towers in recent years on at least three of the sites it identified to state and local officials, and to the public, in 2021, including one in Derby, Vermont, and two in the lakeside New York community of Champlain.

There is almost certainly more border surveillance infrastructure in the region. Agency records describe at least five existing U.S. Customs and Border Protection towers in the federal immigration enforcement jurisdiction covering Vermont and parts of New York. That jurisdiction is called the Swanton Sector, based in the northern Vermont town of the same name.

Auditions for Peter Pan Jr.
Audition Link
Based on J.M. Barrie's classic tale and featuring an unforgettable score by Morris "Moose" Charlap and Jule Styne the Tony-Award winning musical Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favorites of all time. The Junior version is a little shorter and perfect for middle school performers! Our performance dates at Weathersfield School are April 4 and 5.

Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, visit the nursery of the Darling children late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travelers come face to face with a ticking crocodile, the fierce Brave Girls, a band of bungling pirates and, of course, the villainous Captain Hook.

Auditions will be held for 5th - 8th graders in the music room on January 8 & 9 after school until 4:30 pm.

Prepare a short selection (16 bars) of a Broadway or Disney song to show off your voice. You will be asked to read from the script and participate in a group dance audition. If you need help picking a song to sing, see Ms. Towne, or Mrs. Yuengling for suggestions.

AUDITION TECHNIQUES TO HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT AUDITION
Directors respond positively when you do the following:
BE PREPARED: memorize the lyrics and melody of your song.
SMILE AND ENJOY THE AUDITION PROCESS: the director and the audition team want you to do well.
SHOW GOOD BEHAVIOR: directors are often more concerned with how you behave than how well you sing, act, or dance. Be kind, courteous, and listen to directions.
TRUST THE DIRECTOR’S CHOICES: do your best at whatever you are asked to do, even if you are reading for a role that you find challenging or awkward. Casting the play depends on many factors such as reliability, prior experience, behavior, and talent.
Audition scenes can be previewed here. Click on Audition Central on the right hand drop down, and click on a character. You can see character breakdowns, scripted scenes, and songs. You are not required to learn these prior to the audition.

ABS Reads

Albert Bridge School students love to read, and we're looking for a few more adults interested in joining our school on a weekly basis for 30 minutes to partner with a student to read a book, play a game, and make a connection. Reading to others strengthens reading skills, interest and enjoyment in reading, and provides another connection within our community.

A short training will be required for all volunteers to review expectations and the role of a volunteer. Volunteers will need to commit to a weekly 30 minute time slot during the school year. Dates will be provided during the volunteer training.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming an ABS Reads volunteer, please contact Amanda Yates: ayates@wsesu.net or (802) 484-3344.
