Head Over Heels
Yoh Theatre Players
Woodstock Middle and Union High School, Woodstock Vermont

I hope you caught "Head Over Heels" this past weekend in Woodstock, it was stunning. These talented teens put on such an amazing show. The costumes were over the top. Head Over Heels is a jukebox musical comedy with music and lyrics from the catalog of The Go-Go's.

Jeff Whitty conceived the show and wrote the original book, which was then adapted by James Magruder.

The plot of the show is adapted from "The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia" written by Sir Philip Sidney in the 16th century.

From Wiki:
The kingdom of Arcadia is peaceful and prosperous, its people's lives governed by a mysterious "Beat" ("We Got the Beat"). King Basilius and his wife Gynecia have two daughters. The younger, Philoclea, is in love with her childhood friend Musidorus, a shepherd who is not considered an appropriate match. The older, Pamela, is the most beautiful woman in the land, though she confesses to being jealous of her "plain" sister since she does not have to deal with suitors ("Beautiful").

As Basilius berates Pamela for sending another round of suitors away, a message arrives from Arcadia's new oracle Pythio, asking for a meeting with the royal family and warning that Arcadia may lose its famous Beat. Basilius and his loyal viceroy Dametas depart for the forest, with Gynecia reminding her hot-headed husband to listen to what Pythio has to say.

Pythio, who is non-binary, explains that the kingdom has become too rigid and traditional, and gives Basilius and Dametas four prophecies. ("Vision of Nowness")
"Thy younger daughter will bring a liar to bed. He thou shall forbid, she he'll then assume."
"Thou elder daughter will consent to wed. She'll consummate her love but with no groom."
"Thou with thy wife, adult’ry shall commit"
"You will meet and make way for a better king"

Thousands more people are moving into Vermont than moving away
Vermont Public | By Bob Kinzel
A new study shows Vermont has become a popular place to move to since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state treasurer's office analyzed recent census data and found that on a per capita basis, Vermont had the highest net in-migration of any New England state, and the third highest rate in the U.S. last year.

Vermont had a net gain of 7,592 new residents in 2023, with the greatest number coming from Massachusetts.

Treasurer Mike Pieciak says remote work flexibility and outdoor recreation opportunities are the key reasons people are flocking to the Green Mountain State.

"It's clear that the people who are moving to Vermont are higher-income earners and what that says to me is that they are bringing their remote jobs with them to Vermont," Pieciak says.

But he says the report also highlights Vermont's affordable housing challenges.

As for out-migration, the report says the two most popular states for Vermonters to move to last year were New York and New Hampshire. On a net basis, after accounting for all migration, Vermont lost the most people to Illinois and Utah.

Bernie Sanders tells Politico that next U.S. Senate term will ‘probably’ be his last
The progressive stalwart had been noncommittal about future plans in local interviews prior to being reelected in November to his fourth term.
by Kristen Fountain

Vermont’s senior U.S. senator shared new insight this week into how long he may be willing to represent the Green Mountain State in the nation’s capital.

In an interview published by Politico Tuesday night, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said he was likely to call it quits after his fourth six-year term in the chamber.

Asked by the Beltway-based news outlet whether his next term would be his last, Sanders said, “I’m 83 now. I’ll be 89 when I get out of here. You can do the figuring. I don’t know, but I would assume, probably, yes.”

Sanders, who served as Vermont’s sole representative in the U.S. House for 16 years prior to his election to the Senate in 2006, had been unwilling to speculate about the future during his reelection campaign this year.

Asked a similar question by VTDigger in October, Sanders said, “Let’s worry about this election.” He also emphasized his vigor, telling VTDigger, “I think I have the energy to do the job. If I didn’t, I would not have run for reelection.”

Investigation probes truck driver’s alleged inhumane treatment of pigs at North Springfield slaughterhouse
PETA called for an investigation after a federal inspector reported pigs were kicked and shoved off a trailer at the facility in June.
by Greta Solsaa

Local police are investigating an incident last summer at a North Springfield slaughterhouse in which a federal investigator witnessed what it described as “inhumane” animal handling.

On June 3, a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector reported observing a truck driver at Vermont Packinghouse unloading pigs, kicking them in the head and neck, and shoving them off the back of a trailer. The pigs appeared to be suffering heat stroke after an eight-hour journey from a New York farm in the summer sun, according to the inspector’s findings.

After the incident came to light in a quarterly USDA report of noncompliance records, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals last month called for a criminal probe. The organization, known as PETA, sent a letter to Windsor County State’s Attorney Ward Goodenough on Nov. 26 urging him to take action.

The new position was created after Dartmouth Health acquired Claremont’s Valley Regional Hospital, which had faced financial struggles in recent decades, on July 31. Windsor’s Mt. Ascutney has been included in the DH network since 2014.

“With (Mt. Ascutney) and Valley (Regional) now under the leadership of one president and CEO, the goal is to enhance collaboration and streamline decision-making across the two facilities,” Dartmouth Health spokesperson Audra Burns said Monday. “This change is expected to improve efficiency, align priorities, and ensure consistent standards of high-quality care while maintaining the unique strengths and local identity of each hospital.”

Auditions for Peter Pan Jr.
Audition Link
Based on J.M. Barrie's classic tale and featuring an unforgettable score by Morris "Moose" Charlap and Jule Styne the Tony-Award winning musical Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favorites of all time. The Junior version is a little shorter and perfect for middle school performers! Our performance dates at Weathersfield School are April 4 and 5.

Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, visit the nursery of the Darling children late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travelers come face to face with a ticking crocodile, the fierce Brave Girls, a band of bungling pirates and, of course, the villainous Captain Hook.

Auditions will be held for 5th - 8th graders in the music room on January 8 & 9 after school until 4:30 pm.

Prepare a short selection (16 bars) of a Broadway or Disney song to show off your voice. You will be asked to read from the script and participate in a group dance audition. If you need help picking a song to sing, see Ms. Towne, or Mrs. Yuengling for suggestions.

AUDITION TECHNIQUES TO HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT AUDITION
Directors respond positively when you do the following:
BE PREPARED: memorize the lyrics and melody of your song.
SMILE AND ENJOY THE AUDITION PROCESS: the director and the audition team want you to do well.
SHOW GOOD BEHAVIOR: directors are often more concerned with how you behave than how well you sing, act, or dance. Be kind, courteous, and listen to directions.
TRUST THE DIRECTOR’S CHOICES: do your best at whatever you are asked to do, even if you are reading for a role that you find challenging or awkward. Casting the play depends on many factors such as reliability, prior experience, behavior, and talent.
Audition scenes can be previewed here. Click on Audition Central on the right hand drop down, and click on a character. You can see character breakdowns, scripted scenes, and songs. You are not required to learn these prior to the audition.

ABS Reads

Albert Bridge School students love to read, and we're looking for a few more adults interested in joining our school on a weekly basis for 30 minutes to partner with a student to read a book, play a game, and make a connection. Reading to others strengthens reading skills, interest and enjoyment in reading, and provides another connection within our community.

A short training will be required for all volunteers to review expectations and the role of a volunteer. Volunteers will need to commit to a weekly 30 minute time slot during the school year. Dates will be provided during the volunteer training.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming an ABS Reads volunteer, please contact Amanda Yates: ayates@wsesu.net or (802) 484-3344.
