Weathersfield Weekly Blog Special Edition, February 27--School Vote Delayed, Fuller Runs for Moderator as Write-in

Weathersfield School Board Vote to Postpone the School Budget, Articles and Candidates Voting and Informational Meeting on Saturday

On Monday, the school board met in a special meeting and voted to postpone ALL Weathersfield School district voting as well as the informational meeting, previously scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 2nd.
The school board received permission from the Vermont Secretary of State's office to postpone the voting on the school budget and articles in the School Warning. They also received permission to extend the terms of the seated school directors until the next school district vote.
In 2022, Vermont leaders crafted a piece of legislation that aims to reshape the state’s educational system, particularly in rural areas.

Act 127 redefines pupil weights. Stated simply, the law is meant to direct education money toward schools and students who need it most. Act 127 recognizes that certain groups of students need more educational resources. These categories include low-income students, English Language Learners (ELL), and students in small or rural districts which typically have a smaller tax base.

With property taxes forecasted to increase by more than 20% this year – a figure deemed unacceptable by both the Legislature’s Democratic leaders and Republican Gov. Phil Scott, lawmakers scrambled in February to write legislation that would repeal that tax break and give school districts extra time to draft new spending plans.

The legislation, H.850, would give schools until April 15 to reschedule their budget votes – should they choose to do so – and sets $500,000 aside to reimburse districts for related costs. It would also require town clerks to mail a new ballot to anyone that’s already requested an absentee ballot.
Governor Phil Scott signed H.850 on February 22.

The school board will be having a regular school board meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 2nd to discuss possible changes to the budget and to set a date for the Informational Meeting and the Australian Ballot Vote.

It would appear from H.850 that the vote will need to take place BEFORE APRIL 15, and the WARNING needs to be posted one month (March 15) prior to the school district vote.

David Fuller runs for Town/School Moderator as Write-in Candidate
With both the Town and School Moderators positions open on the ballot, David Fuller has stepped up and thrown his hat into the ring, well actually he needs you to write him in for Town Moderator (the school moderator vote has been postponed, see above).

If Fuller does not secure the position by write-in balloting, the Select Board will need to appoint someone to fill this position.
