The Last Tenney Maple Tree Has Been Removed

Not sure but I think this is the tree. Photo courtesy of the Weathersfield Historical Society.

The last of the Tenney maples was removed last Wednesday. The century-old maple tree long associated with late Vermont farmer Romaine Tenney was removed from its location at the edge of the park-and-ride lot off Exit 8 of Interstate 91 in Ascutney, Vt.. VTrans cited safety concerns about the rotting tree. A pavilion will be built in its place. Other memorial items will be made by Rockledge Farm on Ascutney Basin Rd.

All Vermonters 16 years+ Can Make Vaccine Appointments by April 19

All adult Vermonters will be eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine by April 19, Gov. Phil Scott announced Friday.

Appointments will open on a staggered basis for people in different age groups over the next five weeks.

Scott laid out the following schedule:
Thursday, March 25: 60 and older
Monday, March 29: 50 and older
Monday, April 5: 40 and older
Monday, April 12: 30 and older
Monday, April 19: 16 and older

To register for a vaccine appointment, visit healthvermont.gov/MyVaccine (preferred) or call 855-722-7878.

You will be asked to provide your name, date of birth, address, email (if available), phone number, and health insurance information (if available, but not required).

Scott said this new schedule would lead to most people who want to be vaccinated getting both doses around June, on track for a return to normalcy by the Fourth of July, more than a “small cookout with friends and family,” he said.

As of Friday, about 30% of Vermonters 16 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine. The state has been ramping up its clinic schedule with National Guard members and new infrastructure for large clinics, said Mike Smith, secretary of the Agency of Human Services.

President Joe Biden has ordered states to open vaccination appointments to all American adults by May 1. By setting this schedule, Vermont appears to be exceeding that target.

Vermont and federal income tax filing deadline pushed back to May 17

Vermonters will have an additional month to file state income taxes this year, as the Internal Revenue Service announced Wednesday it was pushing back the federal tax deadline amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new tax deadline is May 17, and will also apply to Vermont personal income taxes, homestead declaration forms, and property tax credit applications, which are typically due on April 15.

Craig Bolio, commissioner of the Vermont Department of Taxes, said Thursday that, by law, the Vermont personal income tax due date moves with the federal income tax due date.

“So the IRS announcement yesterday extending federal individual income tax due date to May 17, 2021, also extends Vermont’s,” Bolio said.

IRS officials said they are giving people more time to file their income taxes this year because of the strain posed by the ongoing pandemic.

Track the Vaccine Doses

Want to track the COVID-19 dose distribution?
Benjamin Renton, a senior at Middlebury College who has been tracking data during the pandemic, has launched a new dashboard using local news reports and press releases to track how many vaccine doses each state is being allocated.

Tracking the COVID-19 Variants

The CDC has just gone live with a map tracking the known cases in the US of the three emerging coronavirus variants that have the world on edge: B.1.1.7 (the one known as the UK variant); the B.1.351 variant first seen in South Africa; and the P.1 variant first seen in Brazil. At the moment, there are cases of B.1.1.7 in NY, MA, and CT, but none reported so far in VT, NH, or ME. Note that the CDC says their numbers are based on sampling, and so "do not represent the total number" of cases that may be arising.

TRAVELING To/From VERMONT

The State of Vermont has suspended its leisure travel map and implemented a mandatory quarantine for anyone returning or traveling to Vermont.

Vermont and Non-Vermont Residents

Anyone returning or traveling to Vermont must follow Vermont’s mandatory quarantine policy. Vermonters returning from an out-of-state trip must complete either a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test.

If you have been vaccinated, you do not need to quarantine to travel to Vermont or return to Vermont, as long as at least 14 days have passed since you received your final vaccine dose.

There are currently limitations on multi-household social gatherings in Vermont. Vaccinated individuals or households may gather with other vaccinated individuals or households. For individuals and households who are not fully vaccinated, social gatherings indoors and outdoors in private spaces are limited to only two unvaccinated households at one time, plus any fully vaccinated households. Visitors traveling to Vermont and staying at a lodging establishment, short-term rental, or with friends and family, must follow these gathering restrictions. Lodging with another household is considered a multi-household social gathering and is subject to the rules outlined above.

Vermonters must remember to follow any travel restrictions and quarantine requirements for the states they plan to visit.

Residents of other states must adhere to the quarantine guidelines:
  • Travelers arriving to Vermont in a personal vehicle must complete either a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test in their home state and enter Vermont without further quarantine restrictions.
  • Travelers arriving to Vermont who have not completed a pre-arrival quarantine must complete either a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test upon arrival in Vermont (such as at a Vermont lodging establishment). (Travelers must stay in their quarantine location for the duration of quarantine other than to travel to and from a test site.)
Read more about quarantining at the Vermont Department of Health website.

Residents of communities within five miles of a Vermont border with a neighboring state should consult the travel FAQ for additional guidance.

All out of state travelers utilizing lodging, camping and short-term rental properties in Vermont must sign and complete a Certificate of Compliance or affirm a compliance statement via a digital check box at the time of reservation and check-in to attest that they meet the quarantine requirement or are an essential/authorized worker.

All out of state travelers are strongly encouraged to register with Sara Alert upon arrival to Vermont to get two weeks of daily reminders to check for common symptoms of COVID-19.

Find answers to common questions about cross state travel.

NH DHHS Announces Potential Community Exposures Connected to Positive Cases of COVID-19 at Hampton Wrestling Tournament – March 15, 2021

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has identified potential community exposures related to multiple confirmed cases of COVID-19 associated with the King of the Mat Wrestling Tournament, held on Saturday, March 6, at the RIM Sports Complex in Hampton, NH. Any individuals who participated in or attended the King of the Mat Wrestling Tournament during those times may have been exposed to COVID-19 and should seek testing. DHHS has conducted contact investigations and is notifying known close contacts directly.
