Everybody is Irish on St. Patrick's Day

Dublin Glasnevin Cemetery Museum

More info about Glasnevin: https://www.glasnevinmuseum.ie/
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th century, Glasnevin Cemetery became the resting place of some of the most well-known figures in Irish history such as: Daniel O'Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, Michael Collins, Éamon de Valera and Constance Markievicz to name but a few.

Traditional Full Irish Breakfast in Killarney

We have been lucky to have visited Ireland twice. It's a magical island. Our first visit was in 2014 . We enjoyed it so much we returned in  2016

We were supposed to head there for another Irish adventure last Spring but COVID-19 canceled that trip. Hopefully, we'll get to return to the Emerald Isle later this fall.

We travel a lot with Go Ahead Tours They offer well planned out travel to some really special places. This next trip we'll be traveling with Vagabond Tours.

(Is it just me or does Ireland look like a portrait of a dog's head?)

Rotting tree, long a memorial to an Ascutney farmer, to be cut down

From Saturday's Valley News

ASCUTNEY — A dying maple tree that has stood as a memorial to a Weathersfield farmer who opposed construction of Interstate 91 through his farm will be cut down as soon as next week after years long efforts to restore its health.

In its place, a pavilion will be built to honor Romaine Tenney and tell the story of his life. The Agency of Transportation is giving the town a $30,000 grant to pay for its construction, Weathersfield Town Manager Brandon Gulnick said Friday. VTrans will retain the right to remove the memorial in the future if there are safety concerns.

The tree, at the edge of the park-and-ride lot off Exit 8 of Interstate 91 in Ascutney, was once owned by Tenney, who set fire to his farmhouse properties and died by suicide in 1964 after Vermont served him papers to take his land and barn by eminent domain to build the interstate. The maple has long been seen as a symbol of Tenney and the principles he stood for.

In 2016 The Weathersfield Proctor Library hosted an event honoring Romaine Tenney. Some photos from the event are POSTED HERE.

FAQ Live: VT Digger Hosts Covid-19 questions about variants and vaccines

VTDigger will host another FAQ Live event to answer reader questions about Covid-19 vaccines and variants this upcoming Wednesday, March 17 at 5:30 p.m. featuring Dr. Jan K. Carney of the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.

Last week we were overwhelmed with reader questions about vaccines and the state’s rollout during our event with Deputy Health Commissioner Tracy Dolan. We will address some of the questions we could not get to last week in our limited time. We also invite readers to submit new questions specifically for Dr. Carney.

This event, part of an ongoing series aimed at answering readers most commonly asked questions about Covid-19, will be livestreamed Wednesday evening on the VT Digger homepage and YouTube channel. They will also update this page with the livestream link.

National COVID-19 Data

Track the Vaccine Doses

Want to track the COVID-19 dose distribution?
Benjamin Renton, a senior at Middlebury College who has been tracking data during the pandemic, has launched a new dashboard using local news reports and press releases to track how many vaccine doses each state is being allocated.
The feds have cut way back on their initial promises and have no readily available public data effort like it on their own,  Renton updates his dashboard regularly as new information becomes available. Click Here to Track

Tracking the COVID-19 Variants

The CDC has just gone live with a map tracking the known cases in the US of the three emerging coronavirus variants that have the world on edge: B.1.1.7 (the one known as the UK variant); the B.1.351 variant first seen in South Africa; and the P.1 variant first seen in Brazil. At the moment, there are cases of B.1.1.7 in NY, MA, and CT, but none reported so far in VT, NH, or ME. Note that the CDC says their numbers are based on sampling, and so "do not represent the total number" of cases that may be arising.

TRAVELING To/From VERMONT

The State of Vermont has suspended its leisure travel map and implemented a mandatory quarantine for anyone returning or traveling to Vermont.

Vermont and Non-Vermont Residents

Anyone returning or traveling to Vermont must follow Vermont’s mandatory quarantine policy. Vermonters returning from an out-of-state trip must complete either a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test.

If you have been vaccinated, you do not need to quarantine to travel to Vermont or return to Vermont, as long as at least 14 days have passed since you received your final vaccine dose.

There are currently limitations on multi-household social gatherings in Vermont. Vaccinated individuals or households may gather with other vaccinated individuals or households. For individuals and households who are not fully vaccinated, social gatherings indoors and outdoors in private spaces are limited to only two unvaccinated households at one time, plus any fully vaccinated households. Visitors traveling to Vermont and staying at a lodging establishment, short-term rental, or with friends and family, must follow these gathering restrictions. Lodging with another household is considered a multi-household social gathering and is subject to the rules outlined above.

Vermonters must remember to follow any travel restrictions and quarantine requirements for the states they plan to visit.

Residents of other states must adhere to the quarantine guidelines:
  • Travelers arriving to Vermont in a personal vehicle must complete either a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test in their home state and enter Vermont without further quarantine restrictions.
  • Travelers arriving to Vermont who have not completed a pre-arrival quarantine must complete either a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test upon arrival in Vermont (such as at a Vermont lodging establishment). (Travelers must stay in their quarantine location for the duration of quarantine other than to travel to and from a test site.)
Read more about quarantining at the Vermont Department of Health website.

Residents of communities within five miles of a Vermont border with a neighboring state should consult the travel FAQ for additional guidance.

All out of state travelers utilizing lodging, camping and short-term rental properties in Vermont must sign and complete a Certificate of Compliance or affirm a compliance statement via a digital check box at the time of reservation and check-in to attest that they meet the quarantine requirement or are an essential/authorized worker.

All out of state travelers are strongly encouraged to register with Sara Alert upon arrival to Vermont to get two weeks of daily reminders to check for common symptoms of COVID-19.

Find answers to common questions about cross state travel.
