Weathersfield Weekly Blog, November 7

Veterans Day Nov. 11
I hope you remembered to turn your clocks back on Saturday night. It always takes me and my dog about a week to adjust the clock changing ritual in spring and fall. And I’m not looking forward to the dark mornings and dark afternoons either. I must be getting old, I sound like a curmudgeon.

Mark your calendars-Veterans Day in Perkinsville Sunday Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.. Veterans Day is day to remember and honor the selfless dedication of service members, men and women, who have boldly stood in harm’s way carrying the torch of freedom fighting to protect our abundant way of life. Please come to the Perkinsville Green, in Perkinsville Vermont on to celebrate our Veterans.

Adventures and Assignments

Friday we traveled to Manchester, Vermont to one of our favorite venues-Billsville House Concerts. Local musicians Carling and Will opened the show.

The main act was 10 String Symphony
Named for their unique instrumentation of two five string fiddles alternated with a five string banjo, 10 String Symphony is the collaboration between GRAMMY nominated fiddle player Christian Sedelmyer (The Jerry Douglas Band), and acclaimed songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Baiman. Since their inception in 2012, the duo has gained the attention of NPR’s Jewly Hight, who listed them among “The Newest and Best Voices in Americana” for their unique and compelling vocal and string arrangements, which are at once traditionally informed yet completely avant garde. Their new album, “Generation Frustration”, produced by Scotland’s Kris Drever, digs even deeper into the potential for experimentation with stringed instruments while highlighting new depths in the pair’s original songwriting. Unafraid of pushing boundaries, the resulting songs are as challenging as they are beautiful.

Saturday we went to Plymouth NH Flying Monkey Movie House to see John Hiatt in a solo acoustic show.  On October 12th, John Hiatt released his first album in four years, "The Eclipse Sessions", via New West Records. Hiatt’s 23rd studio release since introducing himself with 1974’s Hangin’ Around the Observatory. Hiatt recorded the album in Nashville over the course of just a few days in the summer of 2017, which happened to include the full solar eclipse that took place on August 21st. Never one to ignore the good fortune of a successful recording session, Hiatt titled the album after the otherworldly natural wonder.

Sunday, I met my friend for lunch at Salt hill Pub and then took in the Trumbull Hall Troupe production "Love At First Bite." An original musical by Jodi Picoult, Ellen Wilber and Jake van Leer. The story focuses on a teenage vampire attending a new high school where the kids aren't necessarily what they seem to be. Monsters hide their true selves for fear of repercussions and rejection. The theme resonates today and this quote sends a clear message-"Be different, Be yourself, but most of all Be Positive." so says the teenage Vampire Drake.

Proceeds from Trumbull Hall Troupe productions go to The Upper Valley Haven, CHaD and Zienzele Foundation.
