News You Can Use

Weathersfield select board and town news: The town now has a newsletter. You can read it online on the town’s website and Facebook page. The select board met Nov. 5 to begin budget discussions. The town also is advertising for a part-time police officer; details are on the website or at the town office. Ascutney Volunteer Fire Association has retained an attorney in order to recoup over $7000 that AVFA has not received from the town. Discussion about hiring a police officer to work in Weathersfield and to be hired out to Cavendish and Baltimore revealed the hire rate to be $65 per hour for 20-25 hours for Cavendish and 5-8 hour for Baltimore. The select board voted to suspend the Fire Commission indefinitely while the board discusses the formation of a municipal fire department. The board will meet the first Monday of the month for about one hour and the second Tuesday of the month for two hours to discuss the transition. More information about the select board and the town contact Town Manager, Ed Morris, at 802-674-2626 or townmanager@weathersfield.org.

Dump Truck and Car Collide on Rte 131 Monday morning Nov. 12.
Around 8:30 a.m. Monday morning a 2014 International tandem dump truck owned by St. Pierre, Inc. and driven by Dennis J. Thompson, 63 of Charlestown was traveling westbound on VT Route 131 and crossed the double yellow center on the sharp corner by the intersection of Branch Brook Road and collided with a 2015 Toyota Camry driven by Ronald Prouty, 46, of Weathersfield. No injuries were reported at the scene. Prouty was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Thompson was cited under Vermont Civil Violation Complaint 3321345 T23 VSA 1038 (driving on roadways laned for traffic) and court action in Windsor County is pending according to a Vermont State Police report.

The crash resulted in diesel fuel and oil being spilled creating a hazmat situation that had traffic tied up for hours. West Weathersfield Volunteer Fire Department and Ascutney Volunteer Fire Association responded to the crash and initiated the hazmat containment and clean-up.

Reed Trucking wrecker operators/roadside service technicians also aided in the clean up of the oil leaking from the dump truck.
