Woodstock Union High School Host Forensics/Debate Tournament

Abbie Levinson and Lilli Buckengroff - 1st Place Duo Drama
On Saturday the Woodstock Union High School hosted a Forensics Tournament. No this wasn’t a CSI contest, it was an interscholastic debate and interpretation of literature competition. Students “compete” in three rounds of a judged type of public speaking.

The local, regional and national events are governed by the National Forensics League (NFL—no, not the National Football Leauge) and locally by the Vermont Debate and Forensics League) Students are judged by three different judges.

Students are required to attend three (3) tournaments to qualify for the State Tournament, to be held at the Vermont State House next Saturday February 9, 2013. The District Tournament will be held in Oneonta NY in March.

Ten schools competed Saturday including: Lyndon Institute, South Burlington High School, Montpelier, Homespun, Colchester High School, CVU, Vergennes, Hanover, Rutland, and Woodstock. About 100 students were up Saturday morning and debating at 9:30, quite a feat for teenagers. However, these are no ordinary teenagers. These   students are smart, dedicated and determined to succeed. Some have already been accepted into many of the Ivy league Colleges around the country and one even lists M.I.T. as their backup school.
Kachine Schaible 2nd Place Impromptu Speaking
Students competed in Prose, Poetry, Impromptu, Drama, Duo Drama, Radio and Oratory. Social Studies teacher Mr. Gordon Ladd organized the event.

Alyssa Rivera - 2nd Place Prose
Dylan Stuntz - 1st Place Impromptu Speaking

Other Tournament Results: Lilli Buckengroff - 1st Place in Poetry

Woodstock won the Tournament Team Competition. This was the teams 5th win in six competitions this season. The team placed 2nd in the other competition.
