Zambujeira do Mar and on to Lisbon

Zambujeira do Mar

It's our last day in Portimão. We catch an early breakfast and head out to the jetty for one last view of the ocean. We want to get our steps in because we have a long drive to Lisbon today.

Across the bay the fort looks ready for another day.

We meet our bus in the lobby and we're off along the coastal highway and heading to Lisbon.

We make our way to the beach town of Zambujeira do Mar.

The salt-washed fishing town of Zambujeira do Mar sits smack dab in the heart of the wonderful Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.

It’s mainly known as the home of MEO, or MEO Sudoeste, one of Europe’s biggest hip-hop electronica festivals, which takes place in the hills of nearby Odemira.

The street crossings here are still repaired by hand.

The views from the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Mar are breathtaking.

Then you can make your way down to the beach and look up the cliff at the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Mar.

As mentioned above the town loves their music especially in August.

MEO Sudoeste takes place annually in August since 1997, in Odemira. It is organized by live entertainment company Música no Coração and is currently sponsored by the Portuguese telecommunications company MEO.

The festival started as a rock festival. Over the years, it has featured a considerable variety of headliners, such as Anitta, Marilyn Manson, Blur, Sonic Youth, The Cure, UB40, Massive Attack, Kraftwerk, Oasis, Daft Punk, Björk, Faith No More, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West. It had a stage dedicated to reggae music from 2005 to 2013. In the early 2010s, it gradually changed its musical focus to mainly hip-hop, mainstream pop and electronic dance music.

After we enjoy a nice lunch in this seaside town, we're back on the bus and heading north to Lisbon. We cross the Sado River on our way.

As we cross the Ponte 25 de Abril over the Tagus River, you can look back at the statue at the Santuário de Cristo Rei, Sanctuary of Christ the King.

We can also see more stork nests in the electrical towers. A stork condo if you will.

We check into our hotel, the SANA Malhoa Hotel where we'll be staying until we head to the island of São Miguel in the Azores. It will be our base as we explore Lisbon and Sintra.
