Road trip to Burritoville House Concerts in Sullivan, NH to see one of our favorite Vermont bands-The Jaded Ravins.

It's nice outdoor venue with plenty of space for hanging around and listening to good music. And there is even a couple of donkeys to say hi to.

Jaded Ravins are Halle, Kelly and Cody. They really are a power trio of a band.

Ron-the awesome border collie is their tour manager.

Keeping it in the Vermont family-Halle and Kelly play Creston Guitars.

Precision Valley muzzleloader shooting competition

On Saturday, June 1, the Precision Valley Fish and Game Association will hold a muzzleloading smoothbore/shotgun shoot on Route 106 in Perkinsville, Vt., about a mile south of Downers Four Corners (Exit 8 off Interstate 91), from 10 a.m. until midafternoon

Shooters are welcome to bring any modern-made or safe antique shotgun or smoothbore – single barrel, double barrel, side-by-side or over-under, caplock or flintlock, etc. This is a blanket shoot. Every competitor donates a prize related to muzzleloader shooting; the top shooter for the day gets first pick from the prize blanket, then the second-place shooter, and so on. Everyone wins something. Prizes should be worth $15 or more. Shooting consists of 10-shot strings of thrown clay pigeons. There is a nominal fee for registration and reentry. Bring a lunch and drinking water. Spectators are welcome. For more information, contact Eric Bye at bye@vermontel.net or 802-886-1777.

Phil Scott vetoes Vermont lawmakers’ priority energy bill

“Factoring in all the other taxes, fees and higher costs the Legislature has passed over the last two years, I simply cannot allow this bill to go into law,” the governor wrote in a letter to lawmakers.
By Emma Cotton

Gov. Phil Scott on Thursday vetoed a bill that would require Vermont utilities to buy more renewable energy at a faster pace, with most utilities purchasing all of their energy from renewable sources by 2030.

Scott cited the cost of H.289 as his main concern.

“I don’t believe there is any debate that H.289 will raise Vermonters’ utility rates, likely by hundreds of millions of dollars. And while that in itself is reason enough to earn a veto, it is even more frustrating when you consider our Department of Public Service proposed to the Legislature a much stronger plan at a fraction of the cost,” Scott said in a letter to lawmakers explaining his veto.

Scott’s administration, lawmakers and the bill’s supporters and opponents debated the potential cost of the bill over the course of the recently adjourned legislative session. While members of the Public Service Department projected the bill would cost ratepayers $1 billion — a figure that caught on in the public sphere and was often cited by the bill’s opponents — the state’s Joint Fiscal Office later said the bill’s price tag would be less than half the department’s estimate.

Nevertheless, Scott wrote, “factoring in all the other taxes, fees and higher costs the Legislature has passed over the last two years, I simply cannot allow this bill to go into law.”

‘More good than harm’: Phil Scott signs $8.6 billion state budget into law

The Republican governor on Thursday nevertheless urged legislators to live within the state’s means.
By Sarah Mearhoff

Republican Gov. Phil Scott on Thursday signed Vermont’s $8.6 billion budget into law, funding state government for the fiscal year starting July 1.

Negotiations over the state budget, H.883, were notably more amicable this legislative session than last, when it became a proxy war over the fate of the state’s emergency motel housing program. Last year’s battle resulted in a rare budget veto, followed by an override just weeks before the start of the fiscal year.

This year, there was no such showdown. State budget writers largely stayed within the confines of the budget that Scott proposed to lawmakers in January, only exceeding his bottom line by roughly a quarter of a percentage point.

In a letter to legislators accompanying his signature on Thursday afternoon, Scott commended them for this year’s negotiations, saying that the budget process “shows that when we work together — and both sides are willing to give a little — we can craft a budget that meets the needs of Vermonters without adding to their tax burden.”

Scott said the budget invested in key priorities, such as housing, economic development and public safety. “Importantly, it does not rely on new or higher taxes, achieving balance without adding to the significant tax load Vermonters already carry,” he wrote.

Howard Dean, Miro Weinberger rule out runs for governor of Vermont

The former governor and former mayor had both floated the prospect of challenging Republican Gov. Phil Scott.
By Sarah Mearhoff

Two prominent Vermont Democrats who had floated the prospect of challenging Republican Gov. Phil Scott this November have decided against it.

Former Gov. Howard Dean and former Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger both announced Monday that they would not run for public office this fall. With just 10 days remaining before the deadline to appear on Vermont’s primary election ballot, that leaves Vermont Democrats without a well-known candidate to take on the incumbent Republican.

Dean announced his intentions at a press conference Monday morning at the Waterbury town offices. Even as he stepped behind a bank of microphones, it was unclear whether he would join the race or not. He began by thanking supporters “who gathered signatures and organized the process of raising money and building a campaign from nothing.”

Then he let the trial balloon pop.
