Loon adult with chick, Lake Ninevah, Mount Holly VTPaddle Report
On Wednesday, July 7, the Hump Day Paddlers visited Lake Ninevah in Mount Holly, VT. The lake offers great mountain views including Saltash and Okemo/Jackson Gore Mountains.
It's a great place to paddle board, kayak, canoe or fish in a small boat. There is a "greeter" so make sure your boat is clean before arriving so you don't contaminate the lake with water-born invasives.
The resident loon family was out and about swimming, diving and feeding their chick.
We also saw some interesting plant life.

My friend Michelle and I did a late afternoon paddle on Saturday on Knapp Pond II. When we got there, there were only two other paddlers but they left soon after we got on the water.
We saw a Great Blue Heron.
A very friendly beaver.
And a lone loon. In late May there was a loon pair on Knapp Pond I. They were observed building two nests there but when I visited the pond on June 21, the pair was gone and the nest appeared to be abandoned.
Hopefully, this loon will return next year with a mate and try again to build a nest. It would be so great to see a loon chick on Knapp Pond.
There were also a lot of Canada Geese. Watch where you step in the parking lot and grass near the pond. The geese pretty much "go" wherever they please.

Vermont parents will begin receiving checks from the IRS THIS week
VT Digger reports that on July 15, most Vermont parents will begin to receive a new monthly payment from the federal government, as part of the Covid-19 relief signed into law in March.This new monthly payment system is a revision to the existing child tax credit, which was first enacted in 1997. Usually, parents have received a lump sum in their spring tax returns.
The per-child credit was previously scaled on a bell curve, dependent on household income, with lowest-income and highest-income families receiving the smallest returns. Until this year, the maximum credit was $2,000 per child.
The American Rescue Plan, which President Joe Biden signed into law in March, changed this law in a couple of ways. It increased and standardized the amount — to $3,600 for every child under the age of 6 and $3,000 for each child between ages 6 and 17.
Vermont Welcomes Back its Amtrak Trains on July 19 with $1 Fares and Celebratory Events
The celebratory events kick off at 7:30 a.m. at the Rutland Station to celebrate the return of the Ethan Allen Express and at 8:30 a.m. at the St. Albans Station to celebrate the return of the Vermonter.
VTrans will offer return shuttle service from the Castleton station to Rutland for Ethan Allen Express passengers and from the Montpelier and Brattleboro stations for Vermonter passengers. Shuttle service will also be offered from Castleton to Rutland in advance of the Rutland event and from Brattleboro to Bellows Falls in advance of the Bellows Falls event. Shuttle service is limited. Reserve your seat today.

Biden appoints Scott to bipartisan council on national security, disaster response
VT Digger is reporting that President Joe Biden has appointed Vermont Gov. Phil Scott to a two-year term on the Council of Governors, a group of 10 state executives that works with the U.S. president on matters relating to national security, disaster response and recovery and the National Guard.As Scott has been praised for how he has led Vermont through the coronavirus pandemic, the White House announced Thursday that the Republican will join the governors of Delaware, Louisiana, Michigan, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming, Ohio, Minnesota and Tennessee on the 10-member council.
Cooperation between the states and the federal government is “critical” as the U.S. faces new challenges — which range from “extreme weather to domestic and international terrorism to a global pandemic,” according to the White House.
“The Council of Governors will closely coordinate with the Biden-Harris Administration to bolster preparedness, resilience and response on behalf of all Americans in times of need,” the White House announced.
Scott, in a statement Thursday evening, said Biden has stressed the importance of bipartisan partnership and considering different perspectives to “move America forward.”

Careless and Negligent Operation - Attempting to Elude
Offender: Cyrus Salo
On this date while on patrol a vehicle was observed allegedly speeding on Reservoir Road. Officer activated their emergency lights and turned around on the vehicle. The vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed forcing vehicle to pull off the shoulder of the roadway. Officers were able to catch up to the vehicle as it turned onto Wellwood Orchard Road where the vehicle came to rest.
The operator was cited into court at a later date.

On 07/01/2021 at approximately 1120 hours Officers made contact with Heather West at a residence on Little Ascutney Road. On 06/29/2021, Heather was involved in a traffic stop where she gave fake information to officers. After an investigation, Heather was issued a citation for False Information to Law Enforcement to appear in court at a later date.

Windsor County Bike Routes
The Mount Ascutney Regional Commission is pleased to provide this guide to encourage residents and visitors to explore our region by bicycle. The guide provides both maps and narrative descriptions of 19 ideal cycling routes. All of the maps identify the towns and villages they pass through, so routes may be selected by location using the individual map panes or the area overview map.
Routes are identified by yellow or orange lines—solid lines denote paved routes while dashed lines denote unpaved routes.
Each route passes through multiple towns and villages, and while they may be started anywhere along the route, likely parking areas are denoted with a parking icon. Open circles on the route lines signify mile markers—simply count the number of circles on the route between your current location and your destination to calculate distance. Bike shops, food, ice cream, breweries and taverns, swimming holes, and covered bridges are all identified on the maps with corresponding icons. Areas with potentially steep grades and rail road crossings are also identified on the maps.
Turn-by-turn cue sheets, GPS tracks, and digital routes via Strava® are available on the 'The Routes' tab of this website for each route. You'll also find printable maps for each route (remember; there are plenty of areas along these rides where there is no cell service).

Sign your name in the book, adding a few notes or a sketch from your walk, and collect an impression of the stamp as a memento of your journey. Then, carefully re-hide the box exactly where you found it.
If you plan to go on more than one quest, you may wish to create your own “passport book” or field journal into which you will collect your stamp impressions.
You may also wish to create your own personal stamp so that you can leave your mark in each quest’s logbook.
If you are using one of the quests found online, simply print out the clues and the map and take it along with you, otherwise bring your quest book.
Just like any outdoor activity, be prepared for changes in the weather! It is important to bring a good map. Also bring a compass, a water bottle, snacks, and wear comfortable shoes. It’s always a good idea to carry a first aid kit if you will be out in the woods.
Do consider bringing along a field guide to local plants and animals, binoculars and a hand lens for magnification, and your passport book/field journal and personal stamp.
Valley Quest is always looking volunteers to be box monitors and quest testers. Each quest treasure box is checked on a regular basis during the questing season by a volunteer box monitor. These generous, fun-loving people help keep the Valley Quest program alive and running smoothly. If you are interested in becoming a box monitor for a quest in your town, please let us know!

The Weathersfield Historical Society announced the reopening of the Rev. Dan Foster House after a year of closure due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Founded in 2007, the Hall Art Foundation makes available postwar and contemporary art works from its own collection and that of Andrew and Christine Hall for the enjoyment and education of the public.
In Reading, their campus of converted galleries, situated on a former dairy farm, consists of a 19th-century stone farmhouse, three barns, as well as a reception center and café.
Their property’s 5 historic buildings make up approximately 6,000 sq. feet of museum-quality exhibition space. The farmhouse and barns sit next to a waterfall on a tributary of the Black River, and are surrounded by approximately 400 acres of pastures, hayfields and extensive woodland.
Outdoor sculptures by world-renown artists are installed throughout the grounds. Rotating, temporary exhibitions of contemporary art are held seasonally, from May through November.
