Weathersfield News August 31, 2016 Nancy Nutile-McMenemy photosbynanci@comcast.net I don't know about you but my garden is insane with fruit this year. So much so that we had to buy a second freezer for all the tomatoes and sauce I'm storing. I take the lazy way of putting up tomatoes but just washing, drying, popping them into a ziplock freezer bag and sucking the air out with a straw. My romas get cut up and boiled down with peppers, zucchini, summer squash and basil. No food mill for me, we eat the sauce with tomato skins and seeds included (who couldn't use more fiber in their diet, right?) I don't "can" so I store this sauce in re-purposed plastic containers. This process works for us-you might give it a try too. Ok, back to the kitchen to process more tomatoes! Another great weekend of concerts. Friday night, we traveled to the Academy of Music in Northampton, MA to see Lucinda Williams and her band Buick 6 . I only had my po...

Weathersfield News August 24, 2016 Nancy Nutile-McMenemy photosbynanci@comcast.net Holy cow, school starts Thursday Sept. 1. That's next week. Where did this summer go? With school starting, remember to watch for kids crossing the streets and walking on the edges of the roadways. Also leave yourself time in the morning and afternoon as the school buses will be making their frequent stops all around town. In addition, next weekend is an event that the Library has been planning for months-Romaine Tenney: A Celebration of a Farmer's Life. The event details are listed below and it's shaping up to be a very cool, well attended FREE event in town-come check it out Saturday Sept. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Weathersfield Proctor Library.  More info visit:  http://www.weathersfieldproctorlibrary.org/2016/08/romaine-tenney-celebration-of-farmers.html West Weathersfield Fire Department Saluted One of Their Own. Weathersfield Vermont Nancy Nutile-McMenemy "How did I get so lucky?" says Jon Cohen of Deep Meadows Farm in Weathersfield , VT. It's a rainy Monday but the farm is buzzing with folks picking vegetables in the fields; garlic is being cleaned up in the former trotter horse farm's barn. And the Vermont Foodbank's van is being loaded with fresh produce from the former horse stall that has been converted into a cold room for vegetable storage. Cohen grew up in Westchester County and Manhattan  in  New York state. He was always interested in organic gardening. He had a small organic garden while living in New York city 's suburbs, back when organic farming and gardening weren't really buzz words. It's all I ever knew"  Cohen says with a smile.  He left New York at the age of seventeen. In 1986 he leased to purchase a 23 acre farm in Durham, NH, "That's kind of where I cut my teeth" says this self taught orga...

Weathersfield News August 15, 2016 Nancy Nutile-McMenemy photosbynanci@comcast.net By now you all know that the first installment of our taxes were due on Wednesday, Aug. 17. And if you didn't know-SURPRISE! You owe the town some money. I for one don't mind paying my taxes because I can see where the money goes. When our Town report comes out each year, I make sure I read it, especially all the boring budget stuff. So I know our Town Office staff, Police Department, Elementary School Staff and Administrators, Library Staff and Highway crews are hard at work keeping Weathersfield chugging along. Thank you folks! Summer is winding down. The final week of the Front Porch Concert series is this Thursday August 18 at 7 p,m. at Colburn Park in Lebanon NH. Anderson East will perform FREE!  Last week Billy Wylder killed it! A big thank you to The Point FM radio Station, The Lebanon Opera House and Lebanon Recreation and Parks .  More info abou...
