Happy 25th Anniversary Vermont 100 Endurance Run or Ride!
Laura Perry Farrell and Julia Hutchinson O'Brien |
The race is held every year to benefit Vermont Adaptive, a program founded by Laura Perry Farrell (pictured above) to provide sports and recreational opportunities to individuals with disabilities/handicaps, regardless of their ability to pay. The race had been run for many years by Julia Hutchinson's Dad. When "Hutch" passed away suddenly after a race one year, his daughter stepped up and took over as race director and has been doing a phenomenal job since (even running the race this year with her TWO MONTH OLD BABY GIRL!!)
There was quite a field of runners this year with runners coming from California, many from Canada, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and South Africa. 200 Racers finished the race in under 30 hours (the official race cut-off time.) The winner of this years race was Jason Lantz Bib #175 from Lancaster PA with a time of 15:23:26.
At the finish line on Sunday morning, Grace Tran received a proposal and beautiful diamond from her boyfriend Keith Levassuer. The couple is from Maryland and maybe they will return in 25 years to celebrate their engagement with the race! Grace's fingers were so swollen from the race that her ring was a pinkie ring but by awards time she was proudly displaying it on her ring finger.
Guy Alderdice Jr. (orange) from Brownsville VT celebrated his finish in under 30 hours with his family. His wife Krista (pink) came in second for the 100 Mile Horse race on her horse Empirica. Guy was paced and encouraged to finish by his sister Elaine (in black) and crewed by Elaine's partner Christine Thew. Guy's sons Jase (orange) and Justin (blue) are very proud of their Dad.
73 year old Fred Walters from West Olive MI was the final runner to crossed the finish line and was awarded the plaque stating: "This Award Presented to the Individual Who Enjoyed the Vermont Scenery The Longest".
Steve Rojek and Laura Perry Farrell |
At the Awards Ceremony, Horse Race Founder Steve Rojek, Hartland VT and Laura Perry Farrell, Run Race Founder spoke about the 30 years of the horse race and the 25 years of the run race.
Each year the Pinkie Farrell/Jim Hutchinson Award goes to the individual who without want of praise goes above and beyond to make the race happen. This year the award was shared by brothers, Bobby and Brad Farrell (Pinkie was their grandmother).
The Stoney Stone Award goes to the Volunteer who just does what needs to be done, this year's recipient was Matt Smith, pictured here with his family from Reading VT.
Awards were also given out to racers who have completed the 100 miler many times, including one given to Lori Wetzel from Danvers MA.
This years marks 1000 miles for Lori!!

The highlight for this blogger was seeing runners from Montreal on Friday night carrying bags of "THE BEST BAGELS" in the world!
Thank you folks, sure hope you come to the Vermont 50 Mountain Bike or Ultra Run in September because the bag was empty on Sunday morning and I'm jonesing for these yummy bagels already!
