Weathersfield News December 24, 2014
Nancy Nutile-McMenemy

Ah, the last few days of 2014. Time to take a look back at the year that was. My year was filled with music and adventures. It started with Trombone Shorty and ended Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. With about fifty bands and artists in between. My favorite shows would have to be Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt in Burlington VT and Concord NH and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in Albany NY and Mohegan Sun (Uncasville CT.)

I celebrated my birthday in April by diving in the beautiful waters off the coast of Little Cayman in the British West Indies and traveled to Ireland in November to explore this magical Emerald Isle. I covered 38 assignments for the Vermont Standard and 17 shows for the Lebanon Opera House. I saw only three Boston Red Sox games, (it didn't help that they stunk this year) and had the pleasure of shooting three weddings.

The world around me had some pretty strange stuff happen. An Airliner completely disappeared and we still have no idea what happened to it. People around the world celebrating their 15 seconds of fame and raising money for ALS research decided to dump buckets of ice water over themselves and challenge others to do the same.

The Secret Security at the White House was left wondering how the perimeter was breached and an intruder made it into the home of the leader of the free world. The US was invaded by a Polar Vortex from our neighbors to the north. We saw huge amounts of snow and record low temperatures. I know we "burned" through our wood pile really quickly.

A few states decide that selling marijuana to consenting adults may not be a bad thing for the local culture and economy. (Vermont may debate this issue in the upcoming legislative session.)

The Super Bowl in February was a Super Bust-the Seahawks walked all over Payton Manning and the Denver Broncos-not a bad thing for  New England Patriot fans. The Olympics from Sochi was interesting and a lot of Vermonters brought home some heavy metal. As soon as the athletes leave, Russia invades Crimea.

World Cup Fever hits the US in June and a fever of a different kind, Ebola hits the US in October. The mid-term elections, which most people has no idea happened (the lowest voter turnout, like EVER!) saw the Democrats dropping like flies. Politics in Washington will be even more interesting now, NAH.

Race relations took center stage in late November when white police officers were not indicted for killing unarmed black men and the "people" took violently to the streets. Just this last week two New York City police officers were gunned down and there are reports of many threats being made to more people who put their lives on the line to keep the peace. We sure live in a crazy world.

For me, while all these bizarre events were happening in the world, I got to meet some extremely nice people in my adventures as a freelance photographer. I love our little towns here in southern/central Vermont. I hope we all really appreciate what a special place this is and how, thankfully, we are unlike most of the rest of the world.

For 2015, my resolution will be to appreciate the life I have and the people I know now and the ones I hope to meet in this upcoming year.

No local news updates this week as most Boards and Committees in town were off spending time with their family and friends.
