News You Can Use

The first of eleven hikes around Weathersfield took place on Sunday, June 10. A group of about 30 people took a "Walk Inside A Glacier." Jeff Pelton led the hikers off the Crown Point Road to look at the glacial esker ridge near Stoughton Pond and the North Branch of the Black River. As Pelton explained an esker is a "long ridge of gravel and other sediment", it was deposited by melt-water from a retreating glacier or ice sheet. The hike schedule and contact information to the other town hikes are listed below.

Weathersfield School news: WS announced the hiring of Ms. Natalie M. Kocurek as the new middle level ELA teacher at WS. She will start this fall. Ms. Kocurek is a 2015 graduate of Keene State College with a BA in English and Secondary Education. This is the last school report until the fall. Weathersfield Proctor Library news: The Friends of Weathersfield Proctor Library rescheduled their annual meeting to Tuesday, June 19 at 7 p.m.. More information about the Friends or the library contact Mark at 802-674-2863.

Woodstock Union High School Graduation

Woodstock graduated 75 students on Friday, June 8. Inlcuding Weathersfield's own Meghan Snide (on left in the first two photos below). Congratulations Meghan! I covered the graduation for the Vermont Standard.

Get Out and About Events

Children's Summer Reading Program in Ascutney Wednesday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. The library is kicking off their Summer Reading program with an event featuring with Meredith Holch-Stories That Move At The Turn of A Crank. All welcome. Free admission. More information contact Mark at 802-674-2863.

Newell Green Photographs Exhibit and Sale in Ascutney Friday, June 22 at 6-8 p.m.. The library fundraising committee is hosting an art exhibit that will include some of the historic photographs taken by Newell Green. An Exhibit and sale of black and white prints from original negatives (circa 1930s–1950s) by acclaimed local photographer Newell Green (1901- 1993) is planned. A percentage from the print sale will be donated to the library. All welcome. Free admission.

Library Open House in Ascutney Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.. The Trustees and staff invite everyone to come and check out the newly expanded Children's Room. All welcome. Free admission. Refreshments provided.

Summer Evening with Friends and Neighbors in Weathersfield Saturday, July 28 6-9 p.m. at the Weathersfield Center Meeting House. The Weathersfield Proctor Library fundraising committee will host their annual event featuring a silent auction, desserts and appetizers, and music by Jenni Johnson and the Junketeers, who specialize in jazz, blues, and classic tunes. More details to come.

Ongoing Events

Low cost spay/neuter clinics in Springfield. Springfield Humane Society is hosting low cost spay/neuter clinics in 2018: July 10, Aug. 7, Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 6, Nov. 27 at the Springfield Humane Society, on Route 143. Cost is $50 for female cat and $40 for male cat. Weathersfield residents may be reimbursed up to $50 for the surgery with a limit of three pets per year. Get your SNAP form from the town office. Senior Exercise Program in Ascutney: Free. Sponsored by RSVP. Mondays and Wednesdays 10-11 a.m. in basement of Martin Memorial Hall, Route 5, Ascutney. Classes are led by Sandy Lemois. If interested call 674-5254 for more information.

Twin State Depression Support Group in Weathersfield. Free peer-led Depression Support Groups to all, the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 6:30 pm, 5259 Route 5, Ascutney, VT (Martin Memorial Hall - downstairs) and the 4th Wednesday of each month, 6:30 pm, 7 Morgan Street, Springfield, VT (Turning Point) Both venues are accessible. Valley Court Diversion Programs: Volunteers are needed in Weathersfield/Springfield areas to work with low level offenders in the community. The group meets once a month at the Springfield Police Department, your commitment will require about three hours a month. Training is provided.
