Woodstock Union High School Yoh Theatre Players perform "The Physicists"

Ted Morley as Mobius
March 21, 2014
Woodstock Vermont
The Yoh Theatre Players performed "The Physicists" this past weekend. The two act play, a Master Production, was presented in an intimate setting where the audience was seated on stage with the actors. Reservations were encouraged as the seating layout allowed for only 50 audience members per performance. The dark comedy written by Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt takes place on a single day in November 1961 at a villa converted into a private sanatorium.
Hannah Merseal as Dr. Von Sahnd
The play centers on three characters/patients: Einstein (Dune Mayberger), Newton (Nate Hinson) and Mobius (Ted Morley)-who speaks with King Solomon. The doctor in charge of the sanatorium is Dr. Von Sahnd (Hannah Merseal.) She and her nursing staff are quite a crew. Are these people real or are they insane? And who is truly insane? Nothing is as it seems during this play and all is revealed in the final act.
Ted Morley as Mobius and Nate Hinson as Newton
The play is currently relevant with the conflict occurring between Russia and the Ukraine. This plays explores the morals behind the creation of the atomic bomb. Its message is subtly delivered to the audience in this intimate setting. The effectiveness of the play would have been lost in a regular 400 seat theatre setting.

At the conclusion of each performance there was a brief discussion period about the play hosted by WUHS teachers: Thursday-Mrs. Caddie Johansen-Art, Friday-Mr. Garon Small-History, Saturday-Ms. Martha Perkins-Literature, Sunday-Mr. Tim Brennan-Physics.

Next up for the Yoh Theatre Players a celebration of William Shakespeare (as part of the world wide 450th Anniversary.) They will present an all-woman ensemble of performers, spots are open for young women from grades seven to twelve. The performances will happen May 9, 10, and 11.

Robert Cray Raises the Roof and Serious Money for CFSNH!

Thursday March 20, 2014
Concord, NH

Child and Family Services hosted the BLUES SUMMIT with ROBERT CRAY and JON BUTCHER Thursday night at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, NH. The event was a huge fundraiser, raising $64,000! This money will help a lot of local families, at risk teens and will send many children to summer camp!

A new and welcomed addition to the VIP reception before the concert was a live performance by rising star from NH, singer-songwriter, MB PADFIELD

So the VIPs got to sample some really yummy treats and consume some beer and wine all to the tunes by this very talented young woman. Her musical repertoire was astounding.

And then the guest of honor arrived! Here Kat Strange welcomes everyone and introduces Robert Cray.
After a brief photo op session with the VIPs, Mr. Cray was whisked back to the Capitol Center for the show.

Boston rock and roll legend, Jon Butcher opened the SOLD OUT concert.

Keb' Mo' Thrills Crowd at Lebanon Opera House, A Benefit for Cover Home Repair

March 19, 2014
Lebanon NH
Cover Home Repair hosted its Annual Benefit Concert last night. Despite the forecast of heavy wet snow, folks from the Upper Valley and points far away filled the Lebanon Opera House (LOH) for a show of great music by Keb' Mo'.

Cover Home Repair has been putting volunteers to work repairing homes in the Upper Valley since 1998. They even have a store-The ReCover Store that helps fund the Home Repair and Weatherization Programs.

Kevin Moore (Keb' Mo') took the stage and played for a little over two hours. He shared stories and joked with the crowd, especially when "Mary" shouted for him to "The Itch." He also told the audience that he has a new CD coming out April 22.
After LOH, Keb' heads to The Egg in Albany (March 20), Norwalk CT (March 21) and The Wilbur Theater in Boston MA (March 22.) More tour dates: TOUR

Saturday, March 15, 2014

On Saturday night, the Woodstock Union High School Alumni hosted their 13th or 14th Annual Potluck Dinner and raffle. No one can remember when Barb Leonard, Class of 1970 started the dinners but folks do know it happens every March around St. Patrick's Day. Leonard said she started the dinner as a way to get the alumni together during the winter just about when Cabin fever is setting. She wanted it to be a "Moral Booster.". The first few years she invited Key Note Speakers to attend but as the years passed the dinner morphed into the Potluck and Raffle Dinner it is today.

She said the raffle has taken on a life of its own. Folks come to the dinner just to see what's being raffle off and hoping that they take home a lot of treasure. The funds raised though the raffle and Silent Auction go towards the Alumni Scholarship Program and also to help with the Annual Alumni Parade expenses.

This year, as in years past the Alumni who traveled the farthest to attend the dinner was Neil Johnson Class of 1963 who came from Idaho. The Youngest Graduate was Class of 2003 Ailene Faller. The Oldest Graduate was Mona Hoadley Class of 1941. And the Class with most members attending was The Class of 1963 with six members at the dinner.
The Class of 1963, the best represented Class at the Dinner:
Rick Harriman, Carol Birmingham Lamson,
Lynne Woodbury French, Ann Watts Richardson,
Neil Johnston (who traveled from Idaho!)
and Dennis Wright (seated.)

Read a great interview with Keb' Mo' by Seven Days writer Ethan de Seife
An Interview With Blues Musician Keb' Mo'
About 20 years ago, when songwriter and blues musician Kevin Moore reinvented himself as Keb' Mo' with his self-titled debut album, he not only earned awards and widespread praise, but picked up a less tangible honor as well. Blues fans and critics agreed that Moore inherited the mantle of generational spokesman for the blues, passed down to him from Robert Cray. Yet Moore still seems, in some ways, like the new kid on the block. Read More

Special Olympics of Vermont 2014 Games
Suicide Six Ski Area
Pomfret, VT March 8 , 2014

The last seven years Special Olympics of Vermont SOVT has held its Winter Games in Woodstock Vermont. Even with the most athletes to compete in the games so far, the fit with Woodstock seems great.

Photos by Nanci covered the snowshoeing and cross country skiing on Saturday and what a wonderful day it was. If you ever find yourself needing a "feel good" event, you should attend, or better still volunteer to help out with SOVT. I saw more hugs, tears of joy and high fives than I have at another other event I've attended.

Competitions were fierce but everyone was a winner!
