Hartland VT June 29, 2012
The first annual Hartland Soapbox Derby was held on Friday June 29, 2012 in the parking lot of the Hartland Elementary School. The idea for the derby was conceived by Jaxon Morgan the Director of Hartland Community Connections (HCC). Working with Mt Ascutney Prevention Partnership (MAPP), the Vermont Department of Health, HCC and The Town of Hartland, Morgan obtained funding for the materials to build the racers. Race teams are made up of children ages 9-13 who, as a team, designed, built, painted, decorated and raced the cart. In a fashion similair to NASCAR, the teams were encouraged to put anti-smoking logos on their racers. In addition to the derby, the race teams will ride in the Hartland Old Home Day on July 4th.
